Guide to Open Houses for Buyers

Start Your Search

Open houses are a designated event where potential buyers can view a property and meet with a real estate agent. It's a great opportunity for buyers to check out a home and get more information than what was available on the listing. You can also use the time to evaluate your must-haves and deal-breakers or see what kind of value you get at different price points. Open houses don't require an appointment, so you can drop by whenever you like within the designated time window. You can start your search for Open Houses with Century 21 Scheetz here. If you're just beginning your buying journey, find an agent who can assist you in the process.

Be Respectful

When attending an open house, it's important that you make a good impression. You should arrive at the home looking presentable and be prepared to follow any rules in place. Start with introducing yourself and signing in if there is a sign-in sheet available. In general, make sure to be respectful of the home and real estate agent; We recommend asking the agent before you take pictures or open any closed doors.

Ask Questions

This is your chance to connect with the real estate agent and ask any questions you may have. Consider what questions you would like answered before you arrive, and don't be afraid to take notes once you ask them. Some potential questions might be: When was the house built? Have there been any recent renovations or repairs? Do you have an estimate for the utilities cost? Why are the homeowners selling? Have there been any other offers made on the home?

Evaluate the Home

Do you like the amount of natural light? Is the kitchen big enough for you? Is there enough storage space? Are there any signs of neglect to the house? You can also contact your agent to discuss what questions to ask and what you should be looking out for.

After the open house, go over your notes and write down any final thoughts while the home is still fresh in your mind. If you like the house, you can contact your agent to set up a private viewing or put in an offer right away.
